— Anonymous: I just want to say the female gender isn't the only one that's objectified. I will acknowledge that there is more pressure on woman to attain those lofty/almost impossible goals. But men are constantly over looked if they don't meet the tall dark and handsome category. Just a thought. For example how many times do we have to listen to our girlfriends talk about Johnny Depp, Brad Bitt and man others. Women have their desires cute butt, 6 pack, height, muscles, no muscles, a longfellow, etc... So it goes both ways, we as humans will always idolize one image for women and men. We always have, in the beginning the ideal woman was a "robust creature" good for childbirth. Or skip ahead a few hundred years a pale supple woman was ideal. So we will always idolize something, it's in our nature.

I had this exact conversation with my boyfriend last night…are you him, Anonymous?

I absolutely agree with you and I’m sorry I didn’t mention that side of the debate in my article. I was a bit heated and didn’t feel at all like defending men at the time.

But, yes, men are objectified in the media as well. With that being said, and I don’t have an exact statistic, the amount of half naked women in printed adds and other media is significantly higher than the number men. But, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen.

I’m sorry to hear that your girlfriend feels the need to talk about Johnny Deppp and Brad Pitt in front of you. I can personally say that I respect my relationships enough to not do that. If I expect my boyfriend to respect me and what makes me upset I have to practice what I preach.

Ah, yes, the evolution debate. And that’s exactly what it is…evolution. Man has evolved. We used to look for women with large hips and breasts in order to procreate…now we objectify them. We used to hunt and gather…now we eat at McDonalds. We used to draw paintings with berries on cave walls and now we use Photoshop on ipads. In my opinion there is a huge difference between a caveman going “Ug, breasts, hips, good for child” and a modern day man going “Damn, look at those huge titties.”

It absolutely is in our nature to idolize. But, that doesn’t mean that men can’t change. Let’s just keep it classier.
